Tracing its roots to my work in surround-sound starting around 2003,
SoundSquares is the latest iteration on my take of how to handle positioning audio around sound-systems that use a significant number of speakers.

here (and unzip to your plugins folder) - 0423 is the latest-and-greatest-version.
Based initially on the idea that the closer a sound is to a speaker, the louder it should be in that speaker, this VST plugin (32-bit, Windows only) extends the idea of mixing to stereo (and well beyond consumer formats like 5.1) to a system that allows for the visual mapping of an arbitrary number of loudspeakers (upto 64 speakers in total).
Having paused development in 2015, I recently revisited this plugin due to having installed a 24.2 sound system at
x-church in the uk ... and the plug is now in much better shape than ever before, offering some very quick and intuitive ways to manage the creation of audio-works on such systems.
Amongst the hundreds of recent improvements made to the system between Oct '21 and April '23, the following might be considered headlines :
upto 64 inputs and 64 outputs in upto 8 individual roms and 16 groups
Intuitive and customisable hardware accelerated openGL interface
